What is the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana?

The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana is the flagship programme of the Indian government. It was launched by the Government of India in 2015 with the aim of providing pucca houses in rural as well as urban areas with the intention of realizing "Housing for All" by 2022. The home loan subsidy PMAY scheme was planned and designed for the upliftment of underprivileged citizens. Therefore, the scheme is categorized based on the income group of people, which ensures the interests of both buyers and the government.

Check your Eligibility for the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY)

To reap the benefits of any scheme, you need to first understand whether you are eligible for it. Here we are listing the eligibility criteria for PMAY.

  • Every applicant must have an Aadhar Card.
  • None of your family members, including you, should own a pucca house.
  • The annual household income of the applicant must be between Rs. 3 lakh – 6 lakhs to apply for LIG and Rs. 3 lakhs to apply for EWS (Economically Weaker Section).
  • The carpet area of the unit would be 60 sq. m. for LIG and 30 sq. m. for EWS.
  • Eligible applicants can avail themselves of a maximum subsidy of Rs. 2.67 lakh on their house.
  • The beneficiary must not have received any financial assistance from the Indian Central or State Governments.
  • This scheme offers a lump sum of Rs. 3000 for every approved housing loan application.
  • The ownership or co-ownership of a woman is mandatory for a new property.
  • The applicant can avail themselves of the home loan up to a Rs. 6 lakh interest subsidies for a maximum tenure of 20 years. However, on any excess, non-subsidised rates will be applicable.

Documents Required

In case you are eligible, the following are the documents you need to apply for PMAY:

  • Aadhar Card
  • Any Identity proof (Passport, Driving Licence, etc.)
  • Address Proof
  • Certificate of caste (if applicable)
  • Details of income tax, which include IT (Income tax) returns, bank details, salary slips, account details, etc.
  • Evidence that the applicant is building a home in accordance with the PMAY programme.
  • Documents demonstrating that the applicant does not own a home in their name or that of any relatives.

Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Apply Online

In order to apply for the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), the applicants must fill out their personal details on the government website for the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana scheme. Following is the step-by-step guide for applying on the PMAY portal.

Step 1 - Log on to the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana portal. This is the direct link that will take you to the page of "Benefits under Other 3 Components" listed in the drop-down menu of "Citizen Assessment."

Step 2 – Now you need to enter your Aadhaar number and click on Submit.

Step 3 – If the Aadhar number you provided is correct, you will be redirected to fill out important and personal information, including your name, your address, your phone number, the age of the family's head of household, your income, the number of family members, your religion, caste, and other details.

Step 4 – Cross-check the entire information once again and move on to type the captcha code in the box and click on Submit to proceed further.

Application process for Slum Dwellers

While the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana platform is an integrated platform, there is a slight change in the application process for Slum dwellers. Following are the steps to apply for the same:

Step 1 - Log on to the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana portal. This is the direct link that will take you to the page for the "For Slum Dwellers" option listed in the drop-down menu of "Citizen Assessment."

Step 2 - Now you need to enter your Aadhaar number and click on Submit.

Step 3 - If the Aadhar number you provided is correct, you will be redirected to fill out important and personal information, including your name, your address, your phone number, the age of the family's head of household, your income, the number of family members, your religion, caste, and other details.

Step 4 – Cross-check the entire information once again and move on to type the captcha code in the box and click on Submit to proceed further.

As of July 23, 2023, the government had completed the construction of 75.31 lakh houses and sanctioned 118.9 lakh houses with a total investment of Rs. 8.19 Lakh crore under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana scheme. The stats here are a testament that the PMAY scheme is in action and actively transforming the lives of many in rural and urban areas. According to the recent budget, the PMAY scheme is valid until December 31, 2023.
